3-Rig Collision in Stockton Leaves One Killed

A truck driver was killed in Stockton on January 8 after a crash with two other big rigs on the northbound path of Highway 99, south of Arch Road.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says that a Peterbilt silage truck was on the right shoulder of the freeway after it was disabled. Two big rigs approached the truck — one moved to another lane to create more space between him and the disabled truck, while the other rig wasn’t able to slow down and rear-ended the rig, which sent the rig to hit the silage truck on the shoulder.
The driver in the International rig was killed in the crash and was identified as Pedro Avila (36), a resident of Modesto.
Lanes on the highway were closed for most of the morning. The crash is undergoing investigation. Officers, on the other hand, are looking into the possible involvement of drugs or alcohol that may have contributed to the crash.
The accident happened between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Similar Accidents in Stockton
This is not the first time that an individual died on Highway 99. In September of last year, a 38-year-old woman, Carmela Cuevas-Cruz, was killed while driving a Ford Explorer. Witnesses said the driver lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons and it overturned several times.
There were three minors in the car that time. Luckily, the three children survived and suffered only minor injuries. However, in this case, the CHP doesn’t think that drugs or alcohol played a factor.
Also last year, a rig blew a tire on the highway that sent its contents across the roadway. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
Drinking & Driving
The state follows DUI laws that restrict motorists from driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Individuals with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .08% or more are considered to be “under the influence.”
Commercial drivers are under stricter BAC standards. They can be arrested for DUI with a BAC of .04%.
DUI penalties vary on the circumstances of the case. However, being convicted for DUI will stay on your record and count as a prior for ten years.
There has been a growing number of truck accidents in recent past years. This is most likely due to the fact that most trucking companies are under more economic pressure to deliver their cargo as soon as possible. In such cases, some companies cut corners just to meet their deadlines.
Aside from rushing cargo delivery, it is not uncommon to discover tired truck drivers still hitting the road with little rest, causing many of these accidents. Tired truck drivers often skip mandatory maintenance checks and speed up on highways. Such unsafe behavior puts not only them at risk but also the motorists around them.
These negligent actions may lead to catastrophic and life-threatening results, just like in the incident discussed above.
